  • Yvette Stride is a passionate and openminded artist whose practice demonstrates deep cultural sensitivity. Drawing on her personal experiences, she creates works that resonate across different contexts—for example, transforming a photograph of herself diving into the ocean in Australia into an installation vest that she later reimagined in dialogue with the plants of West Mount in Beijing. Through such gestures, she builds bridges between cultures and highlights shared human emotions. As a curator, I have greatly enjoyed working with Yvett; she brings energy, thoughtfulness, and sincerity to every project, and she engages audiences with genuine enthusiasm and care.

Yvette Stride’s work The Sleeping Scholar at the Valley Village Land Art Festival is truly a masterful installation piece that integrates environmental consciousness with cultural depth.

She creatively repurposed old wooden railway sleepers, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable art materials. Meticulously carved into figures resembling scholarly forms, one of the sculptures was ingeniously designed as a Maypole, adorned with ribbons at the top to invite viewer interaction—a testament to her refined attention to detail.

Throughout the creative process, Yvette personally immersed herself in the work, weaving together Australian cultural respect for nature and tradition with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival themes of reunion and gratitude. At the same time, she incorporated a critique of modern education, questioning the dominance of rational, linear, and logical thinking while calling for a return to natural wisdom. The resulting piece is powerfully impactful.

Yvette Stride
